A Belgian performance artist spent 19 days chained to a marble block. He ate slept washed and drew while tirelessly working to free himself. But while he chipped away day after day, Mikes Poppe was unable to escape. Fortunately help was at hand.

Free at last, Mr Poppe did not see his endeavor as a failure.

In his words, " The block was a symbolic of history. The history of art - which i am trying to free my self from. I discovered that its not possible to free your self from the history of art. Its a burden which i must always carry. This is the symbolic meaning of the marble.
