There is so much jewelry out there it is important that your business develop a product that is differentiable and within your means and capabilities to manufacture and market. Unless you can say this with conviction, it is not likely that you will make any money selling jewelry.
As you decide on what kind of jewelry you are going to make, the first question you should ask yourself is who is my target market? For instance, is my goal to sell this to my friends, or am I going to be more commercial and look for stores to carry my lines. Or do I plan to market my goods on the internet? There are many products made that are looking for a market. In order to make money selling jewelry your jewelry must be targeted at a specific market.
Financing the Business
Making jewelry does not have to be capital intensive. For a relatively small up-front investment you can make a few pieces, make money selling the jewelry, and then build up your business. This is not a get rich quick opportunity as there are already a large number of players in this market.
However, the market continues to grow so that as time permits your designs can get better, the material you use can be more expensive and then you can increase your marketing. To make money selling jewelry, as a home-based business, the key is patience. Home-based businesses should not as a rule extend themselves much beyond the initial investment when using their own capital; the use of an investor’s money is a different matter.
Product Quality
Home-based jewelry making is typically a one person operation. Making jewelry is not that easy. It looks simple, but if you want to make money selling jewelry, then you have to produce quality products for your chosen market. You must have the skills and time to do this; it is not typically good enough to string a few beads together in a pretty pattern and sell them in garage sales for you to make real money selling jewelry. Indeed, you must typically produce a niche for your product that is unusual, cheaper or has an angle to it.
For instance, one angle might be to make jewelry out of wild turkey feathers and quills and market them as gifts for the spouses of hunters. Your target audience in this case would be the hunters themselves and not the spouses. The hunters, of course, would think this kind of jewelry to be cute. As you can see from this example, making money selling jewelry may take a little imagination, but it can be done.
