Protect Yourself: Tips to Avoid Becoming a Crime Victim

Stay informed about common crimes and learn practical tips to reduce your chances of becoming a victim. Read on to discover how to safeguard your belongings and personal safety in public places.

In this article, I aim to raise awareness about these crimes and provide advice on how to minimize your chances of becoming a victim.

Unattended Property
One prevalent crime is the theft of unattended property. This often occurs when individuals place their wallets, purses, and other belongings down in public places without paying attention, allowing someone else to pick them up unnoticed. Common locations for this crime include coffee shops, bars, supermarkets, gyms, churches, schools, and workplaces. To avoid falling victim to this type of theft, follow these guidelines: Never leave your belongings unattended, even in your workplace. If you must set something down, ensure that you or someone you trust keeps a close eye on it. Criminals are less likely to target items that are being watched. Avoid leaving valuable items in your car, especially your wallet, when participating in sports or visiting the beach.

Pickpocketing
Pickpocketing, also known as grand larceny, occurs when someone steals from another person's pocket, bag, or purse. It is common in locations such as subways, buses, bus stops, bars, stores, and crowded sidewalks. To protect yourself from pickpockets, consider these suggestions: Women should carry their purses toward the front of their bodies, as carrying them on the back or side makes it difficult to notice when someone attempts to reach in. Men should carry their wallets in their front pockets or jacket pockets instead of their back pockets. If you are tired or intoxicated while traveling on public transportation, avoid falling asleep, as it makes you an easier target. Pickpockets may even resort to cutting open pockets to steal wallets, a technique frequently employed on the subway. Additionally, stay aware of your surroundings at all times, as criminals strike when people are not paying attention.

Snatches
Snatching crimes, such as purse or chain snatching, have become increasingly common. Criminals will take anything they can easily grab, including cell phones, money, and metro cards. Many snatchers use bicycles to quickly grab an item and escape. To prevent falling victim to snatching, avoid carrying cell phones, money, and cards in your hand when not in use. Store them in a secure place instead. When you do need to use them, such as when talking on your cellphone, remain vigilant of your surroundings. Position yourself in a way that makes it difficult for someone to run or walk by you, and hold onto your belongings tightly when others are nearby. As with the other crimes mentioned, always pay attention to your surroundings

Robberies
A robbery occurs when someone uses force to steal another person's property. This force can be physical or the threat of force. It is worth noting that all the crimes mentioned above can easily escalate into robberies. For instance, a purse snatching can turn into a robbery if force is employed. By following the safety guidelines provided for unattended property, pickpocketing, and snatching, you automatically reduce your risk of being robbed. When driving, keep your doors locked to prevent unauthorized entry. Maintain ample space between your car and the one in front of you, allowing you to move forward or around if approached by someone. If you live in an apartment building, avoid entering with strangers. If you encounter a stranger in the lobby or hallway, turn around and leave. Be cautious and ensure no one is following you when you have recently visited places where you displayed money, such as cash-checking establishments or banks.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, you can significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim. If a criminal approaches you and attempts any of these crimes, remember not to resist. Your life is more valuable than your possessions, which can always be replaced. Stay safe
