What to Do Before Applying Makeup

Before we get into listing those basic makeup tips, you need to learn how to prepare your face, even when you plan to wear simple makeup. A pre-makeup routine is nothing a but your regular simple cleanse-tone-moisturise regime to cleanses your face of excess oils, as well as keeps it hydrated, so that the makeup sits properly and evenly on your skin.

Wash your face

Use a cleanser suitable for your skin type; dry skin types should use cream-based cleansers while oily skin types should use gel-based cleansers.

Tone the skin

This step is essential for oily and acne-prone skin types to reduce the oily appearance. Using a cotton ball, dab some toner over your face and neck.

Apply moisturiser

The most important of all basic makeup tips is to hydrate the skin with a moisturizer before applying makeup. Besides keeping the skin healthy and supple, a moisturiser helps achieve a smooth finish of makeup. While dry, and sensitive skin types should go for oil-based moisturizers, oily skin types should opt for water-based moisturisers that won’t clog the pores.
How to do Basic Makeup

Start With a Face Primer

A primer sets the base for the makeup, giving it a smooth appearance, and even makes it last long. You could either buy a face primer suitable for your skin type, or use BB creams, CC creams, and tinted moisturisers. These are good cross between makeup primers and moisturisers, and come added with sunscreen too!

Conceal Dark Circles and Blemishes

In simple makeup routines, a concealer helps cover dark circles and blemishes, while in more complex makeup routines, like HD and airbrush makeup, concealer palettes are used for color corrections, and mask any spots, dark circles, blemishes and large pores. Choose a concealer two shades lighter than your own skin

Apply Foundation Evenly

A foundation evens out the skin tone without making it look unnaturally bright. This, of course, depends on whether your chosen foundation is right for your skin type and complexion. To begin, put some foundation on your hand and apply it on your face using a brush. Use a sponge to blend the foundation evenly on your face.

Sweep a Single-Colour Eyeshadow

For a simple makeup routine, you can sweep a soft eyeshadow colour across the lid. You can try o in dull pink or nude shades. If you are not very comfortable applying eyeshadows, give it a miss, and try coloured eyeliners instead.

Line and Define the Eyes

Lining the waterline, or the bottom of your eyes is simple. Many women, though, find using an eyeliner on the lash line quite a challenge. But a simple makeup look doesn’t need a fancy winged-liner look or double-liner style. A simple stroke is more than enough to define the shape of your eyes. You can experiment with different types of liners to get difference effects. For example, you can use a pencil eyeliner for a soft but thick stroke, while a liquid eyeliner would have darker, sharper finish.

Colour the Lips

Before applying any makeup on your lips, use an old toothbrush to gently scrub away dead skin on and around the lip area. Next, moisturize your lips using a lip balm. Finally, choose a lip color that can complements your overall look. You can use a lip liner to create a shape and define your lips if they are thin and uneven.
