How to Reduce Food Waste at Home and Save Money

Food wastage is becoming a global concern. Keeping statistics of food supply and management, is a way of understanding the citizens nutrition and a countries progress in eradicating poverty and malnutrition. Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted. Food losses and waste amounts to roughly US$ 680 billion in industrialized countries and US$ 310 billion in developing countries.

So you can see how food wastage is a big issue that should not be over looked. Fruits and vegetables, plus roots and tubers have the highest wastage rates of any food items. 

See ways you can avoid food wastage and save money. 

Plan Ahead

Always plan your meal before you embark on it, don't cook what you will end up not eating. Most people are guilty of this, they cook as many food as they want and most of those foods end up going into the trashcan. That does not make sense alright.   

Store Food Properly

Food storage is very necessary, make sure that food that need to be sealed are properly sealed, while those that need ventilation such as onion and tomato are treated as such. Do not let food waste simply because you could not store them properly. 

Buy Less

In order to avoid wastage it is necessary to always buy the amount of food we can consume.

Reduce or Use Leftovers

Always dish amount of food that will be enough for you and your family. If for some reasons there is any leftover, try to store them appropriately, storing in fridge would help so that it can be preserved and reheated again next time.

Preserve Food

Instead of throwing good food into the trash, throw it into the freezer. It can help preserve it and make it last for a while. If you have no freezer, it would be better to always cook food that can be consumed in one time.
